Open-Plan Kitchen or Separate Kitchen? Choosing Based on Your Daily Routine
Don’t judge an open-plan or separate kitchen solely on its appearance. Base your decision on meal preparation, noise levels, entertaining guests, storage and the layout of the workspace.

When it comes to open-plan or separate kitchens, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. How often you cook, your hosting habits and the tasks you carry out simultaneously all influence your choice. Before looking at interior design photos, assess the situation based on your own daily routine.
Simultaneous activities
If one person is cooking whilst another is holding a meeting, the relationship between the spaces becomes important. An open-plan layout may be preferable if communicating with guests or keeping an eye on the children is a priority. The issue isn’t which layout is more modern, but which household tasks are carried out together.
Consider ventilation
Find out about windows, cooker hoods and air extraction. A device that looks robust does not, on its own, guarantee it has been installed correctly. Find out about its operational history and maintenance record for managing odours and steam. Where necessary, have a specialist assess its technical suitability.
Worktops and storage
The internal layout is just as important as the number of cupboards. How much preparation space is left when small appliances are left on the worktop? Does the fridge door obstruct the passageway? If the dining table is an extension of the kitchen, consider its impact on the seating area as well. Plan simply where each item will go.

Usage scenario during a visit
Imagine walking in with a shopping bag, preparing a meal and having the dishwasher running. Can two people move around comfortably at the same time? Does the kitchen layout meet your expectations whilst a guest is seated? Also check the passageways not visible in the photograph.
Assumptions regarding subsequent alterations
Before deciding to ‘remove the wall’ or ‘close off this area’, consult relevant experts to review the project, load-bearing structure, services and planning permission requirements. Not every plan can be altered as desired.
