What Should You Look for When Buying a Smart Home?
In a smart home system, account and access management are just as important as the devices themselves. Check the app, remote control, local control and maintenance options.

A light or blind controlled via an app does not guarantee that the system can be easily handed over to a new user. Account ownership, usability without an internet connection, and maintenance support are important. Ask not only about a flashy display, but also about how the system actually works.
List of included devices
Lists of switches, sensors, control centres, cameras and remote controls should be provided separately. The scope of portable devices should be clearly defined. It should not be assumed that every electronic component shown in the advert will automatically remain in the property. If model and user manuals are available, they should be included in the file.
Account transfer
How will the new user set up the system? How will old access rights be removed? The manufacturer’s handover or reset instructions must be followed. Sharing a common password should not be treated as a permanent solution. If there are cameras or recordings, personal data and privacy conditions must be addressed separately.
Offline use
How are basic functions controlled when there is no connection? Observe the physical buttons with permission. Do not assess critical systems solely via the app screen. Applications relating to electricity and safety must be reviewed by qualified personnel. User experience does not substitute for technical approval.

Support enquiries
Is there an installation record? How are updates and maintenance provided? Which features require a subscription? Is it easy to access faulty parts? Manufacturer support and current terms of service should be verified from an up-to-date source where necessary.
Handover check
Compile a list of accounts, controls and documentation. The clearing of personal records and the organisation of access rights should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedures. Basic functions can then be tested using the new user account.
When inspecting a property with ‘Buy Best Villa’, add the question ‘To what extent and how is it handed over?’ to the standard ‘Is there a smart system?’ query. This helps to determine whether the hardware in question is actually usable in everyday life.
