Is a Balcony Really Practical? 6 Things to Consider Before Looking at the Square Metres

A balcony that looks spacious in the advert may not be usable in the way you expect. Its narrow layout may affect the door opening or the placement of appliances. When choosing a balcony in Antalya, consider not only the space itself but also when and for what purpose it will be used.

1. Determine its function

Breakfast, reading, tending to plants and doing the washing all require different layouts. If you plan to do all of these at the same time, measure the space for moving around. The fact that furniture fits does not necessarily mean it is comfortable to use.

2. Door and threshold

Does the door swing into the path of a chair when opened? Is moving from inside to outside comfortable for you? If there are opening windows or shutters, consider the working area as well. Assess the space from the perspective of your daily use.

3. Shade

A single photograph does not capture the sun’s path throughout the entire day. Look at it at different times of day or ask for the date the image was taken. Nearby buildings and plants can create different effects depending on the season.

4. Privacy

Opposite windows, shared pathways and views from upper floors affect the seating area. Do not focus solely on the best view. If you plan to install blinds or curtains later, the suitability of these should be investigated separately.

5. Technical equipment

Where are the air conditioning outdoor units, drainage and lighting? Do not block the unit’s airflow or service access with furniture. Have any technical modifications assessed by qualified personnel. The presence of visible fittings does not constitute proof of proper installation.

6. Maintenance

If there are marks on the floor or at joints, ask for an explanation. Water drainage may require technical inspection. Do not carry out risky tests on the balustrade or at height.
