The advert says ‘Fibre broadband’: how can you tell if it’s available in your flat?

How do you verify the ‘fibre broadband’ claim in the advert? Use the checklist to check the address, the connection to the flat, the port and the limitations of the current service.

The fact that fibre is available in the neighbourhood does not necessarily mean that the same service can be installed in the flat you are interested in. The building connection, the flat’s line and the provider’s current terms and conditions must all be checked separately. If the connection is important to you, do not leave this matter until the very last day of your move.

Check using the correct address

Use the building and flat details carefully on the providers’ current screens. An old number or a similar street name may give incorrect results. Make a note of the result along with the date. Availability may need to be verified again during the application and technical inspection stages; do not treat the enquiry result as a guaranteed outcome.

Ask about the connection type

The infrastructure leading to the building may not use the same installation method as the connection running to the flat. Where is the termination point? A photograph of the junction box gives an idea, but does not in itself prove active service or available capacity. Supplement the seller’s experience with the provider’s response.

What does a speed test tell you?

A test carried out by a current user reflects specific device, time and connection conditions. The modem, wireless network and concurrent usage can all affect the result. Distinguish between the infrastructure and the Wi-Fi experience in the room. If you are heavily reliant on your work connection, consider an alternative plan as well.

Checklist

  • Which provider is the current service from?
  • Is additional capacity monitoring required for the new subscription?
  • Is the installation point suitable for the workspace?
  • Is additional work required for the cable route?
  • Are the modem or other devices included in the scope of use?

Verify your own requirements

Obtain an up-to-date response from the provider regarding your address and requirements. Do not assume that a connection set up using someone else’s service will be the same.

When searching on Buy Best Villa, instead of simply saying “I want good internet”, you can share usage scenarios such as meetings, file uploads or a constant connection. This distinction makes it easier to determine which technical questions should be asked from the outset.
