Rental Listing Scams: 7 Warning Signs

Asking for a deposit without showing the home, a price far below the market and rushing you are the most common signs of rental scams.

Short answer: Paying a deposit or rent without seeing the home, a price clearly below the market and pressure such as "there is a lot of demand, send it now" are the most common signs of rental scams. Do not pay before verifying the landlord's title deed and identity.

7 warning signs

  1. The price is too low. Clearly cheaper than similar apartments in the same area.
  2. They will not show the home. Excuses such as "I am abroad, the key is with a courier."
  3. They ask for a deposit. A request for money before viewing and before signing.
  4. They rush you. "There is another interested party, send it today."
  5. Payment to a personal account. An IBAN not in the landlord's name.
  6. They do not show the title deed. Identity and title information are not shared.
  7. They skip the contract. Messaging instead of a written contract.

Beware of fake listings

The safe way

  • See the home in person and verify the address.
  • Ask for the landlord's title deed or an authorised power of attorney; verify the title record at the land registry office or through an authorised person.
  • Pay only to an IBAN in the landlord's name, after the contract is signed.
  • Check the estate agent's authorisation certificate number. For details, see our article checking an authorisation certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have to pay a deposit?

Pay it to an IBAN in the landlord's name, with a written receipt and the parties' details.

What if I think I have been scammed?

Report it, with the receipts, to the nearest police station or public prosecutor's office.

Does an "approved" label on a listing site guarantee anything?

It is not a guarantee on its own; an on-site check is essential.
