Choosing Orientation in Antalya: South, North and the Sea View
How south, north, east and west-facing homes live in Antalya's hot summers and mild winters, and which way sea and mountain views face.

Short answer: In Antalya, "south is always best" does not hold. A south-facing home is bright and warm in winter but can overheat in summer; west-facing homes take the hottest afternoon sun; north-facing homes stay cooler but can feel colder and damper in winter. In the city, sea views mostly face south. Decide by the hours you will actually use the home.
When choosing a home in Antalya, orientation matters as much as floor and size. In a city with long, hot, humid summers, direction affects the air-conditioning bill, sleep quality, balcony use and even how quickly laundry dries. This guide covers the four main directions, sea and mountain views, and what to check on a viewing. Orientation is one of the details easily missed when reading a listing; see our listing-reading guide.
The basic logic of direction
Türkiye lies in the northern hemisphere, so the sun rises in the east, passes through the south and sets in the west. So:
- East-facing: morning sun, shade in the afternoon. Pleasant in summer mornings and more comfortable after midday.
- South-facing: the most light through the day. In winter the low sun enters and cuts heating needs; in summer the sun is high, so eaves, balconies and awnings control it more easily.
- West-facing: afternoon and evening sun; in summer it takes direct sun in the hottest hours, and the low sunset light needs curtains or shading.
- North-facing: almost no direct sun; cool in summer, but cold and damp-prone in winter.
This framework changes with surroundings: a tall building opposite can make the same direction behave very differently.
Direction in Antalya's climate
Antalya summers are hot and humid, while winters are mild but wet. These two seasons pull the choice in opposite directions:
- Those who want to avoid summer sun benefit from east and north.
- Those who want winter light and natural warmth find south attractive.
- Year-round residents often prefer south or south-east, where they can manage heat with balcony, curtains and air conditioning.
We cover summer heat in our summer heat article and winter damp in our winter damp article. The shared lesson: direction alone does not decide; insulation, glazing, ventilation and shading matter together.

Which way do sea and mountain views face?
Central Antalya sits at the northern end of the gulf formed by the Mediterranean: the sea is to the south and the Taurus Mountains rise to the north and west. So:
- In the centre, Lara and Konyaaltı, sea views mostly face south, or south-west or south-east depending on the area.
- Mountain views often come from north-facing sides. Choosing a sea view usually means choosing how to manage sun and heat.
- Balconies facing west or south-west can watch the sunset; pleasant, but the western sun also warms the home on summer afternoons.
See our Konyaaltı guide and our Lara and Muratpaşa guide for the character of each area. In "sea view" listings, ask from which room and floor the view is seen and whether it could be blocked by future building.
Sea view or sun comfort?
Most buyers accept some comfort for the view, which is fine. These questions still help:
- From which room is the view: living room or bedroom?
- Does the balcony face the view, or is it seen only when standing?
- Can the balcony be used on summer afternoons? Is there shade?
- Is there a building permit or empty plot opposite? Ask the municipality about zoning.
- Are the windows heat- and sound-insulated?
How to test orientation on a viewing
- Use a compass app to check the facade yourself; listings are sometimes careless.
- View at different times: seeing the home in morning and afternoon makes the sun's effect concrete.
- Walk the balcony and rooms: real heat is felt only in daytime.
- Look at neighbouring facades: buildings and trees opposite decide shade and privacy.
- Check where air-conditioner units sit: performance and appearance can suffer on a sun-facing wall.
Think of direction, floor and plan together
On a sunny facade, lower and upper floors live differently: upper floors get more light and breeze, while roof duplexes are the most sun-exposed. See our article on duplex penthouses. Corner flats have two facades and allow cross-ventilation, a real advantage for summer coolness. Also watch the gross-net gap; read our gross vs net m² guide (in Turkish).
Managing the heat a direction brings
If you choose a sun-facing facade, there are known ways to manage heat:
- External shading: awnings, shutters and eaves stop the sun before it reaches the glass and work far better than inner curtains.
- Glazing: insulated double glazing and solar-control glass make a difference on hot sides.
- Cross-ventilation: two-facade flats can draw in cool night air.
- Planting: shade plants and trees on the balcony reduce perceived heat in summer.
- Air-conditioning plan: ask whether outdoor and indoor unit positions suit the project.
Conclusion
Choosing orientation in Antalya is about balancing hot summers against mild, wet winters. South and south-east often suit year-round residents; east and north stay cooler for holiday-style use; west gains views but needs shading. Before deciding, see the home at different hours, check the direction with a compass and study what stands opposite.
